Hugh Gillies

Who I am.
I'm a sixteen year boy from South Australia.

I am in my second last year at St. Peter's College in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. St. Peter's is one of Australia's oldest schools, turning 150 last year.

On weekends I go home to Yankalilla on the southern coast of South Australia where my parents own two cattle properties.

What I do.
In the summer I row. My current 'seat' in in the bow of an 'eight'. It is a lot of hard work with three early morning a week on the water and two evening a week doing 'weights'. All to ensure we are in tip form for our regattas on saturdays. Last year we won our race in the Head of the River, South Australia's premier boat race.

In the winter I play Rugby Union, an old and rather physical form of football.

Of course, being from the country I ride. I've a thoroughbred called Rocky and a heavy, part Percheron, called Buckie. Buckie was bred at home from Dad's mare Cora.

The last couple of years I have been to the snow to ski and I have done quite a lot of climbing. I love them both but if I had to choose I would choose climbing.
Where I'm going.
I plan to go onto Adelaide University from St. Peter's to do an Agricultural Science degree on the way to becoming a wine maker.

My parent's properties lie quite close to the Southern Vales, perhaps the best wine growing area in Australia, so it is sort of natural that I have taken an interest in grapes. Maybe in the future when my brother and I take over from my parents we can begin planting vines on part of our land - some of it seems suited to it.
